{"id":6595,"date":"2017-09-11T21:22:19","date_gmt":"2017-09-11T21:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchbdev.wpengine.com\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/?p=6595"},"modified":"2017-09-11T22:50:45","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T22:50:45","slug":"off-campus-event-maine-hunger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/events\/off-campus-event-maine-hunger\/","title":{"rendered":"Off Campus Event: Maine Hunger (in October)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/hunger-dialogue\/\"><strong>Maine Hunger Dialogues<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Be part of\u00a0 Bowdoin Team!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jamie Ptacek. &#8217;17 writes:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hey all of you ES people,<br \/>\nI apologize in advance for the length of this email. . .but will be <strong>BEYOND<\/strong>\u00a0thrilled if you make it through the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing you because\u00a0through my ES fellowship this summer I came in contact with a lovely man by the name of\u00a0Frank Wertheim,\u00a0who\u00a0is an Associate Extension Professor of Agriculture\/Horticulture with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension\u00a0and\u00a0the statewide coordinator of the Maine Harvest for\u00a0Hunger\u00a0Program (a pretty big deal). He\u00a0is also\u00a0the chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/hunger-dialogue\/\"><strong>Maine\u00a0Hunger\u00a0Dialogues<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0an event that\u00a0engages Maine college students and campus communities in the fight against\u00a0hunger\u00a0by providing a platform that: 1) raises awareness of the issue, and 2) provides opportunities for students to actively work to address\u00a0hunger\u00a0on their campuses and communities in collaborative partnerships with their institutions.\u00a0Students, staff and faculty from Maine universities and colleges come together and learn about food insecurity issues and student skill building around themes such as project development, outreach and communications and project sustainability. Prepared with these new skills, <strong>campus teams have a chance to apply for a $500 mini-grant as seed money to start up a\u00a0hunger\u00a0prevention initiative on their campus or in their community.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whoa, I know what you&#8217;re thinking, and, <em>yes<\/em>, this is\u00a0very cool stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, when I was interviewing Frank he spent a lot of time trying to convince me to get a\u00a0<strong>group of Bowdoin students together to\u00a0attend the 2017 Hunger\u00a0Dialogue,<\/strong>\u00a0where the\u00a0focus will be\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>Food Waste Recovery.<\/strong>\u00a0The Dialogue will be held at\u00a0<strong>UMaine Presque Isle from\u00a0October 20-21<\/strong>.<em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>To my knowledge, no one from Bowdoin has ever participated in this event, a trend that\u00a0seems long overdue to be broken.<\/p>\n<p>I know that many of you\u00a0may have an interest in\u00a0issues surrounding hunger and food insecurity, so<strong>\u00a0I am\u00a0sending out an email to gauge initial interest in attending the\u00a0Hunger\u00a0Dialogues\u00a0this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The registration fee is $25 a person, which includes hotel accommodations, food, and conference activities. However, I have spoken with Sarah Seames at the McKeen Center and they have agreed to cover the costs of attendance for Bowdoin students if we can get a group of people together.<\/p>\n<p><em>So, if you think that you may have an interest\/be able to attend the 2017 Maine\u00a0Hunger\u00a0Dialogues\u00a0this year, <\/em><strong><em>fill out this<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdmTsxyC0bruh4DEsH3g2MzEf1mBMhTxM1iiqOeHwrUrcPDWQ\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"> Google form<\/a> by the end of the week<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0(this is not a firm commitment, I just want to gauge interest<\/strong>).\u00a0I am meeting with Sarah next week to discuss the details of attending the Dialogues\u00a0and I\u00a0want to have a good idea of how many Bowdoin people may be interested in attending\u00a0before that meeting.<\/p>\n<p>I really think this could be an amazing opportunity to engage with each\u00a0other and other college students from across Maine in thinking about an issue that affects far too many Maine residents. . . .and Aroostook County is a pretty wild place to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Please let me know if you have any questions!
