Application process begins Dec. 2017, deadline to apply: Feb 16, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\"><strong>SEA GRANT MARYLAND Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nEach summer, Maryland Sea Grant\u2019s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports fifteen students to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay.\u00a0It\u2019s a special opportunity to develop your research skills and interests by working with top scientists to study one of America\u2019s most significant coastal resources.<\/p>\n<p>The REU program, funded by the National Science Foundation, is designed for students majoring in\u00a0marine science, ecology, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>During the 12-week program, each student works with a mentor on an individual research project at one of the two marine labs at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences\u00a0located on the Chesapeake Bay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umces.edu\/cbl\">Chesapeake Biological Laboratory<\/a>,\u00a0Solomons, Maryland<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umces.edu\/hpl\">Horn Point Laboratory<\/a>,\u00a0Cambridge, Maryland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications for summer 2018 MDSG Research Experiences for for Undergraduates program will be accepted staring in December. <strong>Deadline: February 16, 2018<\/strong><br \/>\nResearch areas include:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Benthic environment<\/li>\n<li>Climate change<\/li>\n<li>Contaminants<\/li>\n<li>Environmental chemistry<\/li>\n<li>Estuarine processes<\/li>\n<li>Fisheries<\/li>\n<li>Modeling and analysis<\/li>\n<li>Molecular biology and genetics<\/li>\n<li>Physical oceanography<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each REU fellow will receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A stipend of $6,000<\/li>\n<li>Housing costs<\/li>\n<li>Round-trip travel expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Eligibility<\/h2>\n<p>Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents\u00a0and have completed at least two years of study towards\u00a0(but not yet completed)\u00a0a bachelor\u2019s degree.\u00a0Preference is given to students who are rising seniors.\u00a0Students from underrepresented groups and institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Apply<\/h2>\n<p>Interested students are required to submit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application form<\/li>\n<li>Personal statement<\/li>\n<li>Resume<\/li>\n<li>Unofficial or official transcripts<\/li>\n<li>A list of courses in progress<\/li>\n<li>Two letters of recommendation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\/how-apply\">Learn more<\/a>\u00a0about how to apply to the program.<\/p>\n<h2>Learn more about Maryland Sea Grant&#8217;s REU program<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\/schedule-programs-and-seminars\">Schedule, Programs, and Seminars:<\/a>\u00a0Summary of key dates, field trips, seminars on careers in science, and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\/frequently-asked-questions\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/a> about the program.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\/mentors\">Research Topics and Mentors:<\/a> Learn about the research topics studied in previous years by participating students and the mentors who advised them on those topics.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsg.umd.edu\/reu\/students\">Our Students and Their Research:<\/a> Photos and names of past students and descriptions of their projects and publications.<\/li>\n<li>Read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chesapeakequarterly.net\/V13N4\/main2\/\">a feature\u00a0article all about our program<\/a>\u00a0in Maryland Sea Grant&#8217;s magazine\u00a0<em>Chesapeake Quarterly.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SEA GRANT MARYLAND Research Experience for Undergraduates Each summer, Maryland Sea Grant\u2019s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports fifteen students to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay.\u00a0It\u2019s a special opportunity to develop your research skills and interests by &hellip;
