{"id":6983,"date":"2018-01-16T14:43:53","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T14:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchbdev.wpengine.com\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/?p=6983"},"modified":"2018-01-16T14:43:53","modified_gmt":"2018-01-16T14:43:53","slug":"job-summer-assistant-trail-steward-maine-coast-heritage-trust-deadline-to-apply-2918","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/job-opportunity\/job-summer-assistant-trail-steward-maine-coast-heritage-trust-deadline-to-apply-2918\/","title":{"rendered":"Job: Summer Assistant Trail Steward, Maine Coast Heritage Trust (Deadline to apply: 2\/9\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Maine Coast Heritage Trust<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Assistant Trail Steward<\/h3>\n<h2>About the Position<\/h2>\n<p>Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) is looking for two Assistant Trail Stewards who will work under the direction of a Trail Steward on many of the Trust\u2019s mainland and island preserves for twelve weeks over the summer months starting in early June.\u00a0 Work will include trail clearing, trail improvement (including building steps and erosion control structures), boundary marking, painting of structures, basic carpentry, and vegetation control (brush saw work, clipping, etc.) Although not directly responsible for public education, trail staff will be representing MCHT and will be expected to interact positively with the public when there is an opportunity.\u00a0 They will move frequently, although will occasionally work on the same site for more than one week.<\/p>\n<p>Accommodations will vary, depending on location.\u00a0 There will be cabins at some sites, other sites will require camping.\u00a0 Days will be long and days off will be clustered.\u00a0 Some basic gear will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>The Assistant Trail Stewards will be supervised by a Trail Steward.\u00a0 The schedule of work will depend somewhat on weather, but will generally involve outdoor work at sites spread along the coast from Penobscot Bay to Lubec.\u00a0 The trail stewards will need to be able to work and live together in the field.<\/p>\n<h2>Essential Skills<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Experience working in the field and camping.<\/li>\n<li>Comfort level staying in remote areas.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to travel on the water.<\/li>\n<li>Ability and desire to perform hard physical work.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with some or all of the following tools:\u00a0 chain saw, brush saw, compass, GPS.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work and live in all (summer) weather conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Basic carpentry skills.<\/li>\n<li>Good sense of humor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Salary<\/h2>\n<p>The Assistant Trail Stewards will be paid $13\/hour on a bi-weekly basis subject to required withholdings.\u00a0 As a short-term employee, you will be entitled to legally required benefits, i.e., Worker\u2019s Compensation and Social Security (housing and boat transportation provided).
