{"id":7544,"date":"2018-11-09T16:08:57","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T16:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchbdev.wpengine.com\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/?p=7544"},"modified":"2018-11-09T16:09:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T16:09:25","slug":"internship-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/environmental-studies-newsletter\/internship\/internship-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Internship Opportunity: Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worth Applying for!<\/p>\n<p>Applications for the\u00a0<strong>Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftrackmyemails.org%2Fb09b2304567d4a8eb638af2ced9563c0%2Fc1487f0a9f5cecca90f996deb7fd9f08%2F19df2a04536bcfda784dca5e36daffd0.html&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cjlichter%40bowdoin.edu%7C2d4d2739ca474d8b392a08d64328fea0%7C984e32e5f98a4600aa3227c3f948abe3%7C1%7C0%7C636770240835533423&amp;sdata=OfYJSHT%2BjH6L%2Fj7hshfS1rP9yhPEbI5Y%2FZ8Mg2DoZWw%3D&amp;reserved=0\">conservationscholars.ucsc.edu<\/a>)\u00a0<\/strong>at the University of California Santa Cruz are now available, and to ask for your help reaching prospective Scholars.\u00a0 Each March we select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program centered on the summers between academic years.\u00a0 Our\u00a0goal is to\u00a0<strong>serve students from groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, across disciplines,\u00a0who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0We focus our efforts on\u00a0serving college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with two years of college left at a stage when we can support their undergraduate careers and their choices as they graduate.\u00a0 Students who attend or are transferring to any four-year institution in the US, its territories and Native nations are eligible.<\/p>\n<p>During the first year Scholars participate in an\u00a0eight-week, intensive summer course integrating conservation design, leadership and research experiences while traveling with a close group of peers and mentors.\u00a0 During the second summer, Scholars pursue eight-week research and practice internships with nationally recognized conservation organizations and agencies.\u00a0\u00a0A professional development retreat after the second summer brings together the Scholar cohort and prepares them to apply for jobs and graduate school. Throughout the two years and beyond, we work with home mentors at each Scholar\u2019s campus to provide ongoing support.
