Throughout its history, the organization has addressed a variety of needs in\u00a0Maine&#8217;s island and coastal communities and now focuses on supporting them through three strategic priority areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengethening Community Economies<\/strong> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/island-and-coastal-business-launchpad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small business training and support<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/aquaculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aquaculture business development<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/economic-development\/community-economic-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-speed broadband access and digital literacy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/energy-infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access to affordable renewable energy<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/climate-impacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helping island and coastal communities prepare for impacts from\u00a0climate changes and sea level rise.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Enhancing Education &amp; Leadership<\/strong> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/community-development\/leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professional development programs for municipal and educational leaders<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/education\/scholarships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scholarships and support for island and coastal students<\/a>, and workforce development for future leading industries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delivering &amp; Sharing Solutions<\/strong>\u00a0by building capacity through our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/program\/community-development\/island-fellows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Island Fellowships<\/a>, and\u00a0sharing information and resources through our publications, online and digital content, community research (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/working-waterfront\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Working Waterfront<\/em><\/a>\u00a0newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/island-journal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Island Journal<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/waypoints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Waypoints<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandinstitute.org\/what-works-solutions-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What Works Solutions Library<\/a>), and our conferences and events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today, under the leadership of president\u00a0Rob Snyder, the Island Institute\u2019s work remains rooted in Maine, but has expanded through partnerships with similar communities off the coast of the Carolinas, Alaska, Maryland, and elsewhere.
