{"id":497,"date":"2011-07-09T23:32:25","date_gmt":"2011-07-09T23:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchbdev.wpengine.com\/forty-years-the-history-of-women-at-bowdoin\/?p=497"},"modified":"2011-12-09T14:48:20","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T14:48:20","slug":"orient-beta-girls-at-home-brookie-trust-busted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/forty-years-the-history-of-women-at-bowdoin\/social-life-and-fraternities\/orient-beta-girls-at-home-brookie-trust-busted\/","title":{"rendered":"Orient: Beta Girls at Home, Brookie Trust Busted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to coeducation, Bowdoin men often socialized with women from Westbrook College, located in Portland, Maine.\u00a0 The Westbrook women, known as Brookies, were not always well respected, and Westbrook College was given negative labels that included \u201cBowdoin\u2019s Bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This article appeared in the October 9, 1972 issue of <em>The Bowdoin Orient<\/em>, Bowdoin\u2019s weekly newspaper (Document SS, 46).\u00a0 It reflects the transitional period that the college was in, as Bowdoin men began to socialize less with women from the community and more with their female peers on campus.\u00a0 It describes the process of including four female pledges in the Beta Theta Pi house, \u201ca traditionally jockish fraternity.\u201d\u00a0 The women rejected claims and rumors that the Betas were unwelcoming towards Bowdoin women.\u00a0 The <em>Orient<\/em> quotes the women saying, \u201c\u2018the people are great,\u2019 [they]\u2018feel at home,\u2019 and [the men are] \u2018really nice.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article also details the feelings the four pledges had about the Brookies.\u00a0 There was certainly the potential for conflict, as Bowdoin\u2019s female students were searching for their place on campus and the Brookies were Bowdoin men\u2019s traditional social.\u00a0 The Bowdoin women\u2019s responses ranged from stating that the Brookies presence did not matter, to saying that the Brookies were their equals, to dismissing the Brookies.\u00a0 One woman chose not to comment.\u00a0 These responses show that the early Bowdoin women faced numerous challenges in the Bowdoin social scene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1341\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1341\" title=\"SS46 -
