Research topics\u00a0ranged from studies\u00a0that use marine organisms as models for understanding fundamental biological processes \u2013 locomotion\u00a0in sea stars, for instance, or cardiac neural control in lobsters \u2013 to investigations\u00a0of how\u00a0coastal\u00a0organisms and ecosystems are responding to environmental shifts such as rising ocean temperature and acidity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #404040\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-93778 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/community.bowdoin.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/lobster.jpg\" alt=\"lobster (Illustration credit: Abby McBride)\" width=\"128\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #404040\">In his introductory remarks, Coastal Studies Center director and Associate Professor of Biology\u00a0<a style=\"color: navy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bowdoin.edu\/faculty\/d\/dcarlon\/\">David Carlon<\/a>\u00a0described not only the\u00a0ecological changes\u00a0that are taking place in the Gulf of Maine\u00a0but also\u00a0the\u00a0changes in store for the Center and its on-site Marine Lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #404040\">\u201cThe lab is growing already,\u201d Carlon said, with new dry- and wet-lab spaces scheduled to open in time for classes this fall, not to mention\u00a0the pending acquisition of a new\u00a0research vessel that will join the R\/V Laine at the Coastal Studies Center dock.\u00a0In the works is a marine science semester targeted at juniors and seniors, planned for fall 2015.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/07\/cs-symposium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-134\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/07\/cs-symposium-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Dave\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/07\/cs-symposium-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/07\/cs-symposium-250x140.jpg 250w, https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/07\/cs-symposium.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor David Carlon presents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #404040\">Following Carlon\u2019s introduction, faculty members from Biology, Chemistry, Earth\u00a0and Oceanographic Science, and Environmental Studies described their research and shared perspectives from their areas of expertise, while students supported by summer research fellowships reported\u00a0on progress they\u2019ve made so far and previewed\u00a0their plans for\u00a0the rest of the summer, opening up the floor for questions after each talk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #404040\">These\u00a0students and faculty are making use of\u00a0field sites\u00a0throughout Maine and beyond, with a concentration of activity at the Coastal Studies Center itself, only twelve miles from Bowdoin\u2019s campus \u2013 where they can\u00a0take advantage not only of aquarium tanks and other laboratory facilities, but also the natural lab\u00a0that is Harpswell Sound.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After six weeks of conducting their own research projects, the Coastal Studies Center&#8217;s summer fellows were eager to share their research with each other and visiting audience members at the Coastal Studies Summer 2014 Research Symposium.
