{"id":178,"date":"2014-09-24T15:56:48","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T15:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchbdev.wpengine.com\/marine-laboratory\/?p=178"},"modified":"2014-09-30T19:11:38","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T19:11:38","slug":"interested-in-marine-sciences-join-brown-university-professor-jon-witman-for-lunch-friday-sept-26th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/bowdoin-marine-laboratory\/interested-in-marine-sciences-join-brown-university-professor-jon-witman-for-lunch-friday-sept-26th\/","title":{"rendered":"Interested in Marine Sciences?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, September 26th, 12:00-1:00 pm <a href=\"https:\/\/vivo.brown.edu\/display\/jwitmanp\">Jon Witman<\/a> will join students and faculty in the ES Common Room, Adams Hall for an informal lunch and a short video about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglandoceanodyssey.org\/special-video-cashes-ledge\/\">Cashes Ledge in the Gulf of Maine<\/a>&#8212; one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/09\/Capture2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-180\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/09\/Capture2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Capture2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>dynamic hotspots of biodiversity in New England and the entire North Atlantic, an area where he conducts research and collaborates on conservation efforts. Professor Witman will also share his insight into field-study based marine science programs \u2013 an area particularly relevant to Bowdoin as it prepares to launch the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/research\/marine-science-semester-fall-2015.shtml\">Marine Science Semester program<\/a> next fall.<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0 Witman is professor of Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University. Having spent a lifetime studying and researching marine ecology around the world \u2013 and more specifically in six out of the planet\u2019s seven oce<a href=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/09\/witman-calendar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-179\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/marine-laboratory\/files\/2014\/09\/witman-calendar.jpg\" alt=\"witman-calendar\" width=\"130\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a>ans \u2013 Professor Witman is passionate about developing and promoting marine conservation science.<\/p>\n<p>He received a B.A, M.S and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire. Witman has taught at Northeastern University, where he helped develop the Three Seas Marine Biology Program. He has also worked as a collaborating scientist at the Charles Darwin Research Station on the Galapagos Islands. His research interests primarily include the effects of large-scale processes on local communities, benthic-pelagic coupling, biodiversity and supply-sided and trophic ecology. Currently, his lab is conducting research focused around three themes: 1) physical forcing of marine benthic ecosystems, 2) studies on the origin vs. the maintenance of pattern, and 3) marine biodiversity.
