Language mentorships are sustained by volunteers working one-on-one in the classroom with an ESOL student in languages including <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Lingala, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Swahili, Vietnamese, Gujarati, Tibetan, Pashto, Mandarin, Urdu, Italian, Somali, Arabic, Tagalog, Romanian, Farsi<\/span>. Classroom partnerships are sustained by students enrolled in Professor Boyle&#8217;s Teaching and Learning Languages and Cultures Course.<\/p>\n<p>These programs provide exposure to elementary pedagogy with mentorship from classroom teachers. Would you be comfortable reading a children\u2019s book proficiently in your language(s)? We encourage volunteers to share their personal experiences with learning language and their family or community contacts with languages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What if I don\u2019t have a lot of experience working with kids?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volunteers will often work in pairs, and they receive mentorship from current teachers. Enthusiasm and practice will go a long way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do I get one of those cool t-shirts?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes! All volunteers will receive a t-shirt when volunteering for the program. We also invite our volunteers to community meals and celebrations at Bowdoin and local schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the weekly time commitment for volunteers?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At least one 30 minute slot a week, with a 10-week commitment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I have conflicts with the lunchtimes at Kate Furbish, but I still want to volunteer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact us to learn more about our classroom partnership program and other ways to be involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you provide Bowdoin students support with transportation for accessibility or harsh weather? \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, we can offer taxi vouchers if necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What if there are no books available at the school library in my language or I need more resources?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please let us know!
