Temperament dimensions for which TMCQ scales have been created were developed and adapted from dimensions we have studied in both adults and infants via the Children&#8217;s Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ: Rothbart, 2001), Hampton Individual Differences Questionnaire (Victor &amp; Baker, 2001), the Childhood Temperament and Personality Questionnaire (CTPQ; Victor, Rothbart &amp; Baker, 2003), and the CBQ-BPI (Ablow &amp; Measelle, 1993; Hwang, 2002). Four factors have been reliably recovered from this instrument, labeled Negative Affectivity, Surgency Extraversion, Effortful Control, and Sociability\/Affiliation.<\/p>\n<p>Our initial work on the TMCQ included a self-report version that could be completed by children themselves.\u00a0 However, subsequent studies did not support the psychometric strength of this instrument and we no longer disseminate this self-report instrument.<\/p>\n<h3>The Questionnaire<\/h3>\n<p>The Temperament in Middle Childhood\u00a0Questionnaire (TMCQ) has been designed to measure temperament\u00a0in children aged 7 to 10 years. The following non-English versions of the ATQ are available for download:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A<strong> Chinese (Taiwan usage)<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Keng-Ling Lay, Li-Ya Sun, and Chia-Hua Chien<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Czech<\/strong> version,<em> translated by Milo\u0148 Potm\u011b\u0161il and Petra Potm\u011b\u0161ilov\u00e1 of Palacky of University in Olomouc<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>Dutch\u00a0<\/strong>version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Petra Warreyn and Sofia Boterberg<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Hindi<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Ganga Tiwari and Tripti Verma at Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, University of Allahabad<\/em><\/li>\n<li>An <strong>Italian<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Lavinia Barone<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Japanese<\/strong> version of the TMCQ (pdf),<em> translated by Yoshinobu Takahashi, Emiko Kusanagi, and Nobuko Hoshi<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Polish<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Jan Cieciuch<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Portuguese (Brazilian)<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Maria Beatriz Martins Linhares, Sofia Gracioli, Vivian Caroline Klein, and Graziela Nogueira de Almeida<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>Romanian <\/strong>version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Ioana Tincas and Oana Benga<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Portuguese (European)<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, translated by <em>Monica Rocha<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Russian<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>translated by Anexandra Kotenkov<\/em>a<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Spanish<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, <em>t<\/em><em>ranslated by Natalia Barcons and Neus Abrines Jaume<\/em><\/li>\n<li>An <strong>Urdu<\/strong> version of the TMCQ, translated by <em>Abia Nazim<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The TMCQ assesses the following seventeen dimensions of temperament:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Activity Level:<\/strong> Level of gross motor activity including rate and extent of locomotion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affiliation:<\/strong> The desire for warmth and closeness with others, independent of shyness or extraversion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anger\/Frustration:<\/strong> Amount of negative affect related to interruption of ongoing tasks or goal blocking.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assertiveness\/Dominance:<\/strong> Tendency to speak without hesitation and to gain and maintain control of social situations<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attentional Focusing:<\/strong> Tendency to maintain attentional focus upon task-related channels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discomfort:<\/strong> Amount of negative affect related to sensory qualities of stimulation, including intensity, rate or complexity of light, movement, sound, and texture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fantasy\/Openness:<\/strong> Active imagination, aesthetic sensitivity, intellectual curiosity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fear:<\/strong>Amount of negative affect, including unease, worry or nervousness related to anticipated pain or distress and\/or potentially threatening situations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High\u00a0Intensity Pleasure:<\/strong> Amount\u00a0of pleasure or enjoyment related to situations involving high\u00a0stimulus intensity, rate, complexity, novelty, and incongruity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impulsivity:<\/strong> Speed of response initiation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inhibitory\u00a0Control:<\/strong> The\u00a0capacity to plan and to suppress inappropriate approach responses\u00a0under instructions or in novel or uncertain situations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low\u00a0Intensity Pleasure:<\/strong> Amount\u00a0of pleasure or enjoyment related to situations involving low\u00a0stimulus intensity, rate, complexity, novelty, and incongruity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perceptual\u00a0Sensitivity:<\/strong>Amount\u00a0of detection of slight, low intensity stimuli from the external\u00a0environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sadness:<\/strong> Amount of negative affect and lowered mood and energy related to exposure to suffering, disappointment, and object loss.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shyness:<\/strong> Slow or inhibited approach in situations involving novelty or uncertainty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soothability\/Falling\u00a0Reactivity:<\/strong> Rate\u00a0of recovery from peak distress, excitement, or general arousal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activation Control (Experimental Scale):<\/strong> The capacity to perform an action when there is a strong tendency to avoid it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr align=\"center\" size=\"3\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<p>For questions regarding the <strong>TMCQ<\/strong>, contact <a href=\"jen.simonds@umuc.edu\">Jennifer Simonds<\/a> at Jen Simonds at jen.simonds@umgc.edu .<\/p>\n<p>Please note that these questionnaires are to be used for research purposes only.
