Wrong! it is held in Macon, Georgia, which is billed as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maconga.org\/events\/cherry-blossom\/\">Cherry Blossom Capital of the World<\/a>,&#8221; and allegedly is the home of over 300,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/20220326_190735-scaled.jpg\" width=\"336\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/resized-3.jpg\" width=\"334\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the pandemic, I travelled to Washington, DC.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to Our Nation\u2019s Capital dozens of times before, but never during peak cherry blossom season.\u00a0 The banks of the Potomac, glimpsed during the trip from Reagan National Airport to the hotel in Arlington, were transformed by\u00a0 the sugary pink and white floss of petals. The sight brought to mind the classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AOJnEt391nU\">Japanese melody \u201csakura sakura<\/a> yayoi no sora wa mi-watasu kagiri\u201d (you may be more familiar with the version from Bon Jovi\u2019s <em>Tokyo Road<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/resized-2-scaled.jpg\" width=\"292\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,<br \/>\nColouring fields, mountains and villages<br \/>\nAs far as the eye can see.<br \/>\nIs it a misty haze, or clouds?<br \/>\nScented by the rising sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After my presentation (which went well &#8212; thank you for asking) I headed off for a closer communion with the cherry blossoms at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/dctidalbasin.htm\">the Tidal Basin<\/a>.\u00a0 The weather was actually wintry cold with high winds, so I was very glad that I\u2019d brought my magenta wool coat, hat, and gloves (a shivering woman nearby enviously wished she\u2019d done the same).\u00a0 I walked around the entire basin, under the branches heavily laden with pink and white petals, with flurries like snow when the wind gusted.\u00a0 The skies initially were black with ominous clouds, then cleared to sunny bright blue, later returning to drizzle, and the panorama re-animated in the changing light.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/a-few-of-my-favourite-things\/an-essay-in-idleness\/\">Kenk\u014d:<\/a><em> \u201cAre we to look at cherry blossoms only in full bloom, at the moon only when it is cloudless?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/20220326_195051-scaled.jpg\" width=\"517\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Sei_Shonagon\">Sei Shonagon<\/a> (a Heian-era aristocrat) had decided opinions about everything, including different types of flowers. \u00a0Pear-tree blossoms were \u201cthe most prosaic, vulgar thing in the world,\u201d and \u201cthe less one sees of this particular bloom the better.\u201d Red flowering plum trees filled her with happiness, especially when covered in a late snowfall.\u00a0 However, like the rest of the world, including the Emperor Ichij\u014d, she reserved a special passion for the branches of the cherry, denouncing the theft of the petals by the wind. (In DC, breaking off a frond is literally a <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtoncitypaper.com\/article\/454790\/picking-cherry-blossoms-illegal-but-alluring\/\">federal crime<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/20220326_193414-scaled.jpg\" width=\"299\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov-online.go.jp\/pdf\/hlj\/20210401\/20210401all.pdf\">Japan<\/a>\u00a0undoubtedly should own the geographical indication rights to Sakura. One spring, I visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfjapantown.org\/\">Little Tokyo in San Francisco<\/a> with a Colonel in the Japanese Airforce, who said that cherry blossom season is the time to sit under the trees and drink sake (from my close observations, however, every day seems to be the best time to drink sake).\u00a0 Sakura is also consumed in a range of food and drink, from spring-time wagashi to pickled petals; and Starbucks even offers <a href=\"https:\/\/jw-webmagazine.com\/sakura-food-and-drinks-in-japan-2022\/\">Sakura Strawberry Sticky Rice Cake Frappuccino<\/a>, which may be too much of a good thing. \u00a0One of my favourite anime, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Hotta%2C+Yumi%22\">Hikaru no Go<\/a> adeptly shows the changing seasons, with clouds of cherry petals flying when the new school year starts.\u00a0 Along the Potomac, there were probably as many people engaged in hanami as flowers on the tree, including a group of tourists from Japan in kimonos, on a global sakura pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/resized-6.jpg\" width=\"283\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sakura are treasured as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the impermanence of the things we most cherish. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/in.gov.ignca.21038\/page\/7\/mode\/2up\">\u00a0Shonagon<\/a> thought that cherry branches should\/could not be painted.\u00a0 So there is a manifest irony in writing a post about cherry blossoms that will forever be captured in digital format.\u00a0 Technology allows us to transcend seasons and offers a sameness that eradicates the ephemera of time and place.\u00a0 Strawberries, asparagus, and lamb are available all year round, and American restaurant menus rarely change in the spring or winter.\u00a0 Houses are maintained at the same temperatures, and ice is no longer harvested from Maine ponds for cooling \u201cice boxes\u201d in more southern cities (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/02\/24\/808083549\/in-maine-residents-slice-through-thick-ice-to-keep-a-tradition-from-melting-away\">what, never? Well, hardly ever<\/a>).\u00a0 According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/in.gov.ignca.21038\">Pillow Book<\/a>, \u201cif the outfit fails to match the season, then the whole effort is futile,\u201d but today who even knows whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/wear-white-after-labor-day-35950#:~:text=Wearing%20white%20after%20Labor%20Day,was%20a%20sign%20of%20wealth.\">white should be worn<\/a> before or after Labour Day?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/20220326_192025-scaled.jpg\" width=\"332\" height=\"443\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/resized-5.jpg\" width=\"332\" height=\"443\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At least, the National Park Service is acknowledging the transience of Sakura, by maintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nama\/cherry\/index.htm\">a broken link to its site for cherry blossoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.bowdoin.edu\/zorina-khan\/files\/2022\/04\/20220326_103253-scaled.jpg\" width=\"366\" height=\"488\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you guess the location of the International Cherry Blossom Festival?
