Off Campus Event: Nat Wheelwright and the Naturalist’s Notebook @ Topsham Public Library Tuesday, May 7 @ 6PM

Please join the Topsham Conservation Commission as we present Nat Wheelwright and the Naturalist’s Notebook at the Topsham Library
Tuesday, May 7th
6-7:30 pmWhat do you notice throughout the year? Hearing the first peeper in the spring, watching the arrival of monarch butterflies in the summer? Seeing the first snowfall in winter – or noting the last one in the spring? This list, sometimes called phenology or the timing of natural events, is often observed by each of us.  Have you ever wondered how to record this information or whether it is useful?

Nat Wheelwright, Emeritus Professor of Natural Sciences at Bowdoin College, wants to encourage more people to notice the world around them. To this end, he devised The Naturalist’s Notebook (Storey Publishing, 2017), which he co-authored with Bernd Heinrich, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Vermont and award-winning nature writer and artist. Gulf of Maine Books will be on hand to sell The Naturalist’s Notebook; all royalties from the sales of this book go to conservation and environmental education activities.

Come celebrate this book at the Topsham Library any time from 6-7:30.  Learn tips on how to become a naturalist no matter what your background.  Explore tools such as the Naturalist’s Notebook, the creation of your own journal or list of phenology, or the utilization of an online resource such as iNaturalist.  Light refreshments will be served.
