Assistant Needed for Birds of Maine book project
Part time for about 3 months. Start and end dates and hours flexible.

Peter Vickery, noted Maine ornithologist, died in early 2017 before he was able to complete his book Birds of Maine, a comprehensive overview of Maine’s avifauna. Before he died he assembled a team to finish the manuscript and see it published. This team now seeks an assistant for editing and research tasks.

The tasks of the assistant will include:

  • Tracking down missing citations
  • Drafting graphics from numeric and text data
  • Locating and cataloguing photos of unusual sightings referenced
  • Integrating reviewer comments into species accounts, ensuring consistency with Birds of Maine style guidelines

This contract work will be supervised by Barbara Vickery. Location of work is flexible but will require travel to libraries at Bowdoin, Maine Audubon and possibly Colby College and University of Maine in Orono.

Qualifications: BA/BS degree or expected within a year; some knowledge of and strong interest in birds; editing skills; ability to create graphics from data; careful attention to detail; ability to track down information efficiently; demonstrated ability to work independently.

Pay $15/hour
