Assistant Trail Steward
About the Position
Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) is looking for two Assistant Trail Stewards who will work under the direction of a Trail Steward on many of the Trust’s mainland and island preserves for twelve weeks over the summer months starting in early June. Work will include trail clearing, trail improvement (including building steps and erosion control structures), boundary marking, painting of structures, basic carpentry, and vegetation control (brush saw work, clipping, etc.) Although not directly responsible for public education, trail staff will be representing MCHT and will be expected to interact positively with the public when there is an opportunity. They will move frequently, although will occasionally work on the same site for more than one week.
Accommodations will vary, depending on location. There will be cabins at some sites, other sites will require camping. Days will be long and days off will be clustered. Some basic gear will be provided.
The Assistant Trail Stewards will be supervised by a Trail Steward. The schedule of work will depend somewhat on weather, but will generally involve outdoor work at sites spread along the coast from Penobscot Bay to Lubec. The trail stewards will need to be able to work and live together in the field.
Essential Skills
- Experience working in the field and camping.
- Comfort level staying in remote areas.
- Ability to travel on the water.
- Ability and desire to perform hard physical work.
- Experience with some or all of the following tools: chain saw, brush saw, compass, GPS.
- Ability to work and live in all (summer) weather conditions.
- Basic carpentry skills.
- Good sense of humor.
Salary
The Assistant Trail Stewards will be paid $13/hour on a bi-weekly basis subject to required withholdings. As a short-term employee, you will be entitled to legally required benefits, i.e., Worker’s Compensation and Social Security (housing and boat transportation provided). This is a short-term, full-time, 40-hour week, 12-week employment from early June through August. Work-related travel will be reimbursed at .545 cents per mile.
