The position is located in mid-coast Maine, on 330-acre Hog Island, which is a wildlife sanctuary and home to the historic Audubon Camp, which is a learning center primarily for adults, in residence.   http://hogisland.audubon.org    Employees are required to live on the island, which is only ¼ mile offshore, and is quite beautiful.  Good salary plus room and board, and the opportunity to participate in the ornithology and natural history programs at camp.  This is a dynamic, exciting, and unique place to live and work.

The Facilities Assistant will assist the Facilities Manager with all aspects of general grounds-keeping on the island and the upkeep and repair of Hog Island and mainland buildings and building systems. The work week is 40 hours and weekend work will be required, as some projects must be completed around the camp program schedule.  .

Essential Functions:

  • Perform general carpentry projects
  • Mow lawns on Hog Island weekly
  • Conduct landscaping and trail maintenance
  • Operate small boats and transport materials and supplies to and from Hog Island
  • Other projects, as assigned
  • Additionally, assist the Facilities Manager with the following:
    • Launch and maintenance of skiffs, powerboats and dories
    • Maintenance of all buildings, including plumbing, electrical, and septic systems
    • Set up and maintenance of the salt-water aquarium “touch tank”
    • Maintaining shop inventories and tools
    • Overseeing and directing work performed by maintenance volunteers
    • Painting, staining, scraping, and aesthetic improvements to all buildings

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in building trades desirable.
  • Undergraduate or recent college graduate with an interest in both conservation/related areas, as well as taking part in the Camp’s instructional programs.
  • Active driver’s license and experience operating small boats.
  • Ability to safely and skillfully operate power tools, chainsaws, mowers and hand tools.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors, with and around people, and possess the ability to easily adapt to changing priorities; a good sense of humor is highly desirable.

First aid certification a strong plus, as well as technical college degree and strong interest or degree in biology and environmental conservation.

The mission of the Commonwealth Corps is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in service to strengthen communities, address unmet community needs, and increase volunteerism. Commonwealth Corps members with CitySprouts will serve 10.5 months in a full-time capacity. What they have in common is a desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.

CitySprouts’ mission is to develop, implement & maintain beautiful, resource-rich school gardens in collaboration with public school communities. Integrated into curriculum, our gardens inspire teachers, students & families with a deep, hands-on connection to the food cycle, sustainable agriculture & the natural environment. CitySprouts will host 2 full-time Commonwealth Corps members who will serve as Middle School Coordinators, leading Out-of- School Time (OST) & in-school programs in Cambridge & Boston and reaching 175 students. Through their service, members will be lead educators for our Middle School pilot at 6 schools and they will develop & implement family engagement plans with partner schools. In addition, they will leverage the work of 250 volunteers throughout our network of 23 partner schools who will engage in garden education and building projects.

Responsibilities:

Essential

Complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of service, serving through June 24, 2017.

Attend all required Commonwealth Corps trainings and service events held by MSA (minimum of 6 total) and CitySprouts, including a new member orientation on August 15 & 16, 2016.

Participate in a minimum of 1 hour of MSA-related activities each week (in person or virtually).

Participate in CitySprouts regular Staff and Program Team meetings, as well as Supervisor 1:1 meetings.

Serve as lead educators for our Middle School pilot at 6 schools in Boston & Cambridge by developing curricula, facilitating lesson plans and performing weekly evaluations.

Develop & implement family engagement plans with select partner schools and create a model framework for CitySprouts to use organization-wide.

Facilitate and lead volunteers in garden education and building projects.

Qualifications:

Required

Massachusetts residency and legal authorization to work in the United States

18 years of age or older

Experience with or interest in volunteerism and community engagement

Ability to balance service commitment with other family/work/school/community commitments in a sustainable way

Experience working or volunteering in urban public schools, preferably Cambridge or Boston

Experience and/or interest in teaching Science

Experience in leading volunteer or group projects

Experience in leading a family or community engagement project

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally

Position Summary

The Northern NH Land Steward is responsible for the management of the New Hampshire Chapter’s preserves in the northern portion of the State spanning from the Lakes Region to the Canadian border. This portfolio includes the Chapter’s largest preserves, and some of the most visited, including the 10,000 acre Vickie Bunnell Preserve and the 5,000 acre Green Hills Preserve

Essential Functions

The Northern NH Land Steward has a diverse set of responsibilities, including general preserve stewardship (maintaining trails, kiosks, signs, gates, boundaries), recruiting and working with volunteers, supervising seasonal staff and interns, invasive species control, preserve management planning, maintaining records of land management activities, ensuring compliance with Chapter and organization wide policies and procedures, helping to develop and manage budgets, and leading field trips. S/he also supports the Chapter’s legal monitoring activities.

Responsibilities and Scope

The Northern NH Land Steward reports to the Director of Stewardship and Ecological Management, and works closely with a variety of Chapter staff.

 

Specific duties include:

 

  • Provides stewardship for roughly half the Chapter’s portfolio of preserves, including the upkeep of trails, boundaries, parking areas, kiosks, and other preserve infrastructure
  • Recruits and manages seasonal staff, interns and volunteers to assist with basic stewardship needs
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date management plans for northern New Hampshire preserves, and maintains accurate records of preserve management activities
  • Collects and maintains spatial data on preserves and easements using Collector for ArcGIS and other mapping applications designed for use with mobile devices
  • Conducts targeted habitat restoration and management utilizing an adaptive management framework
  • Maintains equipment and tools
  • Supports prescribed fire at multiple sites in NH and ME
  • Works with the New Hampshire Chapter Easement Stewardship Specialist to support annual legal compliance monitoring of conservation easements and other less-than-fee legal interests in northern New Hampshire as needed
  • Helps ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, including the following: Fee Land Management and Inspections; Compatible Human or Economic Use; Standards for Ownership, Management, and Transfers of Lands and Waters; and Conservation Easements and Deed Restrictions.
  • Writes and manages non-real estate contracts for services, agricultural leases, and housing agreements
  • Leads field trips and other outreach activities to advance the Conservancy’s work in New Hampshire
  • Provides support to staff working on land protection projects, including preserve expansions, and conservation easements as needed
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience using common software applications and technology such as Word, Excel, web browsers, GPS
  • Customer service or other experience working with community members

  • Must have valid driver’s license

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant and animal species in northern NH as needed to carry out land management activities.
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principals, and current trends and practices in conservation
  • Experience recruiting, leading, and working with volunteers
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of land stewardship, including managing public use, and maintaining property boundaries, trails, signs, kiosks, parking areas, and other infrastructure
  • Experience with ecological restoration, designing and implementing adaptive management projects, and ecological monitoring
  • Ability and willingness to work closely with scientists and apply science to make decisions and guide activities
  • Knowledge of conservation easements, and experience writing easement baseline documentation reports and conducting annual compliance monitoring
  • Ability to use map and compass and other means of land navigation proficiently in the field, including familiarity with survey maps; proficient with the use of common GPS technology
  • Working knowledge of geospatial software applications, including ArcMap and other mapping software (Google Earth),
  • Working knowledge and ability to use mobile devices (smartphone and tablets) and associated mapping application, such as Collector for ArcGIS
