Roger Katz (R-Augusta) 
Serves Augusta, China, Oakland, Sidney and Vassalboro in the Maine State Senate. Has served in the Senate since 2010 following two terms as the Mayor of Augusta. Katz serves on the Appropriations Committee and as Chair of the Government Oversight Committee.

Katz is a longtime activist in his community serving in leadership capacities with such organizations as United Way, Kennebec Valley YMCA, Team Cony, the Augusta Charter Commission and the Augusta Bicentennial Celebration. Has received number awards for his work within the community including the “Business Person of the Year” award from the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce.

A veteran attorney, Katz is a senior partner in the Augusta firm of Lipman & Katz, is a former president of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and has been named one of the “Outstanding Lawyers in America.” Katz resides in Augusta with his wife, Birdie Newman Katz, and they are the proud parents of two adult children, Jonathan and Shari.

Sara Gideon (D-Freeport)
Is serving her first term as Speaker of the House and third term in the Maine House of Representatives, representing the towns of Freeport and Pownal. As Speaker of the House, she is responsible for presiding over all actions of the House of Representatives.
Her community service, including hours in the RSU 5 schools, on the Town Council and on the boards of the Freeport Community Services and the Freeport Economic Development Corporation, is a major inspiration behind her public service career. Her desire to positively impact the lives of children and empower women and working families is why she ran for office.

Speaker Gideon graduated from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She spent her professional career as an advertising account executive for a nationally renowned newspaper. Her father is a pediatrician who immigrated to America from India. Her mother is also a first-generation American, whose parents immigrated from Armenia.
She lives in Freeport, with her husband Ben and their three children.

CitySprouts is a non-profit school garden program that works with public schools to build capacity to integrate the school garden into teachers’ curriculum and the school culture.
CitySprouts partners with 23 public schools in Cambridge and Boston, MA. Our Middle School Program consists of both afterschool and summer programming with a goal to make the experience of garden-based learning accessible to all young people.

CitySprouts’ Summer Program is based in Cambridge and provides 100 youth (ages 11-14) with hands-on learning through growing, harvesting, preparing and eating healthy food in an urban garden. With an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the summer program fosters a strong connection to their natural urban environment through working and learning in the garden.

CitySprouts is seeking, energetic, diverse, and outgoing college students* to provide essential support to the Summer Program. We expect to accept 8-10 students as CitySprouts Summer Fellows for nine weeks during the summer of 2017. CitySprouts Summer Fellows can expect a significant learning opportunity as well as opportunities for career exploration. Summer Fellows work in pairs, directly with a CitySprouts Garden
Coordinator and will also:

● Receive training in:
○ Urban agriculture
○ Teaching about food and the environment
○ Managing youth groups in an outdoor setting
○ Building relationships with and teaching middle school youth
● Participate in weekly staff meetings
● Collaborate with a garden maintenance team as stewards for multiple school gardens
● Engage in daily lesson and activity planning in STEM-SL curriculum, gardening skills and
cooking

Expectations:
The CitySprouts Summer Fellowship is an opportunity for interested applicants to gain first-hand experience working in the heart of a growing nonprofit organization. Summer Fellows will be given significant responsibility toward making the summer program a successful experience for all participants, as well as in representing CitySprouts to young people, families and the larger community. All members of CitySprouts staff, including Fellows, are expected to uphold the following expectations:
● Be curious, open and willing to try new things
● Express enthusiasm for the CitySprouts program in the garden, in the neighborhood and on ield trips
● Approach the physical labor of garden maintenance with energy and a positive attitude
● Stay mindful of the impact adults have on young people and to foster a positive & respectful relationship between youth, other Fellows and CitySprouts staff

Summer Fellow Responsibilities :
● Youth Development and Education
○ Assist the Garden Coordinator in teaching a team of summer middle school interns
about growing food, garden care, healthy cooking, science of the garden, food
justice, community service, and the natural environment
○ Work with the Garden Coordinator to plan inquiry and project based activities and
lessons for interns related to the above topics
○ Mentor middle school youth and encourage their leadership skills
○ Chaperone youth on field trips to local farms, food pantries and grocery stores
● Urban Agricultural Skills
○ Work as part of an afternoon garden maintenance crew, perform routine tasks such
as watering, weeding, harvesting and planting
○ Complete special garden maintenance and construction projects with garden crew
● Cooking and Food
○ Responsible for pantry inventory at summer internship site
○ Responsible for overseeing and maintaining safety during youth meal preparation
Important Notes :
● Fellows are central to our summer staffing and the success of our summer youth program,
so we ask for a commitment to the full-nine week time period
● Summer Fellows should be willing and comfortable with various forms of commuting in an
urban environment. Throughout the day, Fellows will be expected to travel between
Cambridge school gardens, and a bicycle and or use of the T is the most efficient mode of
transportation in this city.
● The CitySprouts Summer Fellowship is an unpaid position. We ask all Fellows to either
secure funding through their school’s service learning & career center or receive Internship
credits from their college or university. We do not provide housing. If funding for the
summer is an issue please contact us about potential resources.

Portland Water District Summer Job Opportunity– Watershed Protection Specialist

The Portland Water District is seeking job candidates for a summer watershed protection specialist. PWD has an environmental source protection group that works on and around Sebago Lake, which is the drinking water supply for the greater Portland area.

The summer watershed protection specialist position includes such duties as: environmental sampling, field inspection work, limited laboratory analysis, and office tasks.  A primary responsibility of this position will be to organize and conduct PWD’s seasonal Sebago Lake Beach Monitoring Program.  Other responsibilities of the position may include working with our education coordinator and our watershed security officer to help with public outreach events hosted by PWD.

Candidates for this position must have completed a minimum of one year of college coursework in environmental science or a related field and be comfortable and capable of interacting with the public in a respectful and professional manner. Two or more years of college coursework and some experience with GIS software and working in a laboratory setting is preferred.

This is a paid full-time position that will begin in mid to late May and continue through Labor Day or at least the end of August.  It may include some weekend work as needed.

Spiritual Ecology Fellowship: Founded in 2015, the Spiritual Ecology Fellowship is an initiative of Kalliopeia Foundation. The fellowship supports emerging young leaders and innovators who recognize the need to create a future that is not driven by materialism and greed, but rooted in the spiritual values of reverence for nature, stewardship, interconnectedness, compassion and service. The program is designed to offer an experience of deep study and practical application of the principles of spiritual ecology. A central component of the fellowship will be the development and implementation of pilot projects that have the potential to be catalysts for change.

Description: The fellowship follows a 9-month program and will consist of 8 selected participants, all of whom will receive full scholarships for program tuition and a $10,000 stipend to assist with project development. All travel, food and lodging for retreats will be provided at no cost. Successful and viable projects will be eligible for incubation and potential seed funding consideration via the Kalliopeia Foundation incubator program upon completion of the fellowship. Job Description

Hours: 40 hours per week for 10 weeks (approximately June-August, 2017)
Compensation: $12.00 per hour
Requires: Availability and use of reliable personal vehicle

The Regional Field Team (RFT) is a collaboration between four organizations: The Nature Conservancy, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, Phippsburg Land Trust and the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT). The RFT is hired and managed by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, and we are seeking two Summer Land Stewards for 2017.

This is an outdoor position helping to maintain, monitor, and manage the protected lands and trails of the Kennebec Estuary region. Projects will be conducted on lands protected by all four regional organizations, giving our Summer Land Stewards experience with a wide variety of properties, tasks, and land conservation professionals. This will be an excellent opportunity for networking and gaining land management experience.

The Summer Land Stewards will work under the direction of the KELT Stewardship Coordinator and other seasonal staff. For some tasks, the Stewards will work directly with staff or volunteers from organizations other than KELT.

Responsibilities

The Summer Land Stewards will often but not always work as a team, and may work independently or with volunteers and/or staff. Solo work may be required at times. The Stewards will frequently meet visitors on our properties. Successful applicants will be expected to act professionally and communicate necessary information in a polite manner.

Tasks are likely to include the following:

  1. Conduct trail clearing and trimming with loppers, hand-saws, bow-saws, etc.
  2. Occasional use of string trimmer or hedge-trimmer for trail clearing
  3. Monitor trail conditions and create detailed reports of problem areas
  4. Traverse property boundaries to maintain signage and check for encroachment
  5. Assist with occasional clean-up of illicit dumping sites
  6. Build bog bridges, steps, and other trail structures
  7. Check and maintain kiosks, map boxes, trail signage, and paint blazing
  8. Conduct mechanical control of invasive plants (i.e. cutting, digging, or pulling)
  9. Assist with any other suitable project, indoor or outdoor, as needed
  10. Keep a log of activities and hours completed

Preferred Education

Completed High School program and some college. Applicants still in HS may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Necessary Skills

  • Driver’s license and reliable personal transportation
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment over rough ground
  • Willingness to work in sometimes adverse conditions including heat, rain, biting insects, and difficult terrain
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools in the field
  • Ability to work independently, responsibly, and safely

Preferred Skills

  • First Aid Certification
  • Experience working on trails
  • Experience communicating with the public
  • Map and compass (orienteering) skills

Summer 2017 Internship: Environmental Inspection (Kleinfelder)

Kleinfelder is currently seeking Summer Interns for Environmental Inspection worked throughout the State of Maine.  This is a Paid Internship.  These positions will start in the middle of May and end as students need to return back to school, generally the end of August.  This is likely to be a repeat opportunity for staff over the next 2-3 years of summer employment.

Ideal student candidates will have majors in Civil or Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science.

The Intern will work under the direct supervision of experienced staff, and will assist in a combination of office and field activities which will vary from week to week.  There will be significant travel in this position throughout the State of Maine.

Interns will be:

  • Reviewing erosion and sedimentation Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Reviewing Contractor Erosion and Sediment (E&S) control plans.
  • Performing Regulatory Compliance tasks for each project.
  • Documenting and Photographing Site Visits

The position requires good writing and verbal communication skills.

The ideal candidate must be able to conduct work outside in varied weather and field conditions over successive days.

Candidates should be recent graduates or pursuing a degree towards Civil or Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science/Ecological Science, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have good computer skills, be able to get along well with others, be well organized, and be very capable of conducting field work. This will entail steep terrain, working in inclement weather, and working longer than an 8 hour day for several days in a row. Experience conducting field work either while employed or as a volunteer, is desirable.

The ideal candidate must have a valid drivers’ license with an excellent driving record. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required, and an A.A. /A.S. degree or additional science/environmental related course work will offer an advantage for this position. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are energetic and enthusiastic, have an interest in the environmental field, and who are highly organized and able to work independently to complete assignments.

Candidate should have the ability to travel in State and may be required to stay overnight in hotels. Hotel expenses and a per diem for food expenses will be paid by Kleinfelder. Positions are anticipated to last from May to mid-September. Full time positions for successful candidates are possible but not guaranteed.

Through the operation of Urban Adamah’s two-acre organic farm and internships with local community organizations, fellows gain significant skills, training and experience in sustainable urban agriculture, Jewish spirituality, intentional community, and leadership development.
