Ecological Data meets Conceptual Art
Artist Talk by Todds Forsgren ’03
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 4:00 PM
Edwards Art Center, Room 103

I use photography to examine themes of ecology, environmentalism, and perceptions of landscape while striving to strike a balance between art history and natural history. To do so, I employ a range of photographic approaches, from documentary strategies to experimental techniques.

I studied biology and visual arts at Bowdoin College and photography at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and I have a Masters degree from J.E. Purkyně University. I was also an artist-in-residence at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, the Artist’s Enclave at I-Park, and Maryland Hall for Creative Arts as well as a Fulbright Fellow in Mongolia. See Todd’s website for more information.

Off Campus Event: New England Food System Innovation Challenge (Register by Oct. 8!)

Registration for the 4th Annual New England Food System Innovation Challenge closes on October 8th. The Challenge will be held Nov 9-11 at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish Maine.

College Challenge:How might we create products, services, app’s or organizations that support the expansion of production, distribution, processing and consumption of local, sustainably produced food and seafood.  We are seeking idea or very early stage ventures. Registration is now open at:  www.NEInnovationChallenge.org

Consider products or services that address one or more of the following:

* Helping food producers become resilient in light of climate change.
* Applying big data to small-scale production.
* Utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) to bring efficiency to small producers and harvesters.
* Providing equal access and ability to purchase healthy food to all.
* Reducing or repurposing food waste.
* Making the food supply chain transparent to all.
* Reducing or conserving inputs – like water – in the production of healthy, sustainably produced food.
* Using drones to improve the efficiency of small-diversified farms.
* Integrating aquaponics, hydroponics or land based aquaculture into the food system.

The food system is vast and complex system and this is by no means a complete list. We are looking for innovative and sustainable idea stage enterprise that could become startup ventures.

Then you should register for a beautiful fall “Race through the Woods” at Hidden Valley Nature Center. Explore the exciting mix of single and double-track trails over rolling terrain in this challenging racecourse.

Racing starts at 10:00 am. Racers will have two course options to choose from: a 13.1 mile half-marathon or a 5.5 mile race (5.5 milers share the course with half-marathoners, same start time).  This single loop course brings you over steep hills, through the woods, past beautiful ponds and has about 1,000 feet elevation.

If you’ve never been in a trail race this is a great, fun event to start with.  After the race everyone is encouraged to stick around and enjoy a bonfire, hot cider or a beer from Sheepscot Valley Brewing Company one of our sponsors. Light local lunch options will also be available after the races.

Kids 10 years and under can participate in a fun obstacle race starting at about 10:30 am (after the other races have taken off). The race will be only somewhat competitive; the goal is really just to have fun. Each racer will receive a ribbon. After the official race, kids are welcome to enjoy the course at their own pace. Thanks to our Kids Race Sponsor – Maine Helicopters!
