Alumni Job: Assistant Professor of Bio/ Kent Island Field Station Director

Assistant Professor of Biology and Director of the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island

Bowdoin College, located along the coast in Brunswick, Maine, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Biology and Director, Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island beginning Fall 2017. The successful candidate will play a leadership role in fostering a thriving intellectual environment at Bowdoin College’s Scientific Station on Kent Island (https://www.bowdoin.edu/kent-island/). The station, located on Kent Island, New Brunswick, Canada (44 35’N, 66 45’W), was established in 1935 as a research facility and sanctuary for nesting seabirds, and has been a member of the Organization of Biological Field Stations since 1988. Population, community and behavioral ecologists are encouraged to apply and applicants should demonstrate that their research takes advantage of this unique island setting.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and who will enrich and contribute to the ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity of the Department and College faculty.

The summer research season typically includes 6-10 fellowship students conducting research during the summer months under the guidance of the Director, an Assistant Director  – the search for whom will be led by the successful candidate – and a vibrant community of international researchers. We especially welcome applications from those with quantitative strengths in, for example, statistical analyses, demographic modeling, or the use of genomic and bioinformatic approaches to ecological questions. The yearly teaching load on the main campus includes a core course in general ecology, participation in introductory biology or non-majors biology and an upper level course in Biology. Bowdoin faculty are committed to providing research opportunities for undergraduate students and the successful candidate will be expected to mentor student-led independent projects and to actively encourage student involvement in research.

Excellent opportunities exist for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions and collaborations with Bowdoin faculty in Biology, Earth and Oceanographic Science, and Environmental Studies along with other departments and programs at the College, and for synergies with Bowdoin’s Marine Lab and Coastal Studies Center on Orr’s Island ME. The Coastal Studies Center, a 20-minute drive from main campus, is a 114 acre facility that includes over 100 acres of coastal forest, a marine laboratory with flowing seawater, access to 5 miles of coastline, and a small boat fleet to access Casco Bay and the greater Gulf of Maine.

Ph.D. required; postdoctoral experience preferred. Bowdoin College offers strong support for faculty research and teaching. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of spouses and partners of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please visit https://careers.bowdoin.edu to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research plans, statement describing teaching philosophy/experience, a statement of directorial vision for the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island, and the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request. Review of applications begins February 1, 2017.

Off Campus Event: “Tankers Full of Tar Sands in the Gulf of Maine?” CANCELLED

Tankers Full of Tar Sands in the Gulf of Maine?
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!
Tue, 6 December, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
The Farmstead (next to Flatbread Pizza), 399 Commercial Street, Route 1, Rockport. Maine (map)

Can you imagine what would happen if a supertanker spilled tar sands oil in the Gulf of Maine? Our fisheries and coastal tourism could be ruined for generations! Tar sands oil is the dirtiest, most polluting oil on the planet. A tar sands spill is nearly impossible to clean up if spilled in our waters. Now, TransCanada, the energy giant that fought to build the Keystone XL pipeline, wants to build an even more massive pipeline across Canada—passing just miles from the Maine border—to deliver tar sands oil to Saint John, New Brunswick. Once there, tar sands would be loaded onto nearly 300 supertankers every year and shipped across the Gulf of Maine!

Please join Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM) in Rockport for a presentation by experts from the Natural Resources Defense Council, along with a local perspective from the Island Institute about this emerging threat to Maine’s coast.

From Bowdoin Alum, Julia Maine ’16:
I just wanted to send you my contact information, in case you have any students who would be interested in the LabVenture! Position. They will definitely be advertising for at least a couple positions in May or June this year and probably almost every year from now on.
It’s a great position for someone who is interested in science education, outreach, or the work that GMRI does. I included a couple links with more information. Just thought it might be a nice thing to keep in the back pocket!

From 1870 to 1908, artist and botanist Kate Furbish traveled Maine, collecting, classifying, and illustrating the native flora of her state. Plants and Flowers of Maine: Kate Furbish’s Watercolors, a new two-volume set produced by Bowdoin College Library and Rowman & Littlefield publishers and in collaboration with Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, faithfully reproduces some 1,300 of Furbish’s drawings.

The team behind the book will discuss Furbish and the importance of bringing her work to a wider audience.

A reception and opening of the exhibition, Botanizing America, will immediately follow on the second floor of Hawthorne-Longfellow Library.

Books will be available for purchase at the event.

On Campus Event: Off Campus Study Fair- School of the Environment (OCS Fair- Wed. 9/28 3-5:30 Morrell Lounge)

I’ll be returning to Bowdoin this year for the study abroad fair, which will take place on Wednesday, September 28th, from 3-5:30 in the Morrell Lounge of Smith Union. I’d be happy to meet with any students who might be interested in the program and answer any questions.

At the School of the Environment, students spend six intensive weeks in Vermont, immersing themselves in the study of the relationship between humans and the environment. They may choose to study under an introductory track or a more advanced track (for those with previous Environmental Studies experience). In each, they take a core course, a practicum, and two elective courses for a total of 9 semester-hour credits. The video below helps to give a better sense of the student experience, and more about the curriculum and financial aid can be found on our website.

If you think there might be any interest in the program among your students, would you mind passing the message on once again?
Thank you so much,
