WPI 2 – Penn 1
Congratulations to WPI for winning their first ever match in RoboCup!
CMU 4 – Bowdoin 0
Bowdoin went down in its first match of the U.S. Open 4-0. The match featured much falling down and many broken robots. We learned afterwards that we weren’t getting any sensor information except for from the camera. So basically nothing that helped us walk, or detect that we were falling, etc. At the time this was very depressing. Once we learned of the bug it was a big relief. We actually had a couple of great scoring opportunities that ended with a fall and a broken robot. Video to come later.
Humans versus Machines
In the wake of Watson’s triumph on Jeopardy there has been a lot of interest about where AI is.
Stephen Wolfram, the creator of Wolfram Alpha and Mathematica has a nice blog post about the differences between Wolfram Alpha and Watson.
The Atlantic has an article about the Turing Test in which machines tries to fool people into believing that the machines are human. Turns out the Turing Test isn’t quite what we thought it was.
Joho is a world champion again
The University of Michigan’s MAGIC (Multi-Autonomous Ground-robotic International Competition) team was named winners of the $750,000 first prize yesterday. Was there any doubt once Joho joined the team?
Hail to the victors valiant,
Hail to the conquering heroes,
Hail, hail, to Michigan, the leaders and best!
Go Blue!
Robots make you smarter
It’s true.

We’ve had a great time so far. Today we spent 7 1/2 hours talking science with people from all over the country. We had visits from Northern Bites alum Nick Dunn, as well as alum George Slavov’s sister and a bunch of other Bowdoin alums.
Alums in the news
Joho still has the magic. Ahem. Here he is talking about the University of Michigan’s entry into the Multi Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge.
