T minus 2 days and counting

Sorry for the lack of updates recently; all of us have been hard at work preparing both the Aibos and Naos for competition in China. The Naos present extremely interesting possibilities for the future, not the least of which is their improved camera.

Here is a picture from the Aibo camera:

Here is a picture from the Nao camera:
Nao Blue Goal with 4 corners visible

Not only is the resolution much improved (640×480 pixels versus 208×168) but also the vantage point allows the Nao to see a lot more of the field at any given time than the Aibo ever could.

There is still a lot of work left to do before competition starts, but we’re ready for it.

NBites in the finals

Sorry for a lack of updates yesterday.

Due to a problem in their code, Brown did not have a team ready to play a normal match. We instead played against their Wii remote controlled dogs for fun and to entertain the crowd.

We then played against CMU and eventually won 5-2. It was very nail-biting as we had a couple very near goals on our goalie (You’ll see what I mean once the video is uploaded).

As I write this CMU is playing Brooklyn College to decide 3rd and 4th place. CMU is currently ahead 3-0 at the half. We are scheduled to play against AustinVilla at 12 noon to decide first and second place.

We want to express our gratitude to CMU for the excellent accommodations here at the venue; the science center is great fun to explore during down time and we have been treated to many fine meals while here.

fallen nao
You cannot tell from the picture but the Nao the man is holding had just fallen over and his head literally popped off the body. This occurred during a demonstration of the Nao’s walking capabilities; it is going to be a hard long road of development to get the Naos to perform as well as the Aibos do now, but we’re looking forward to the challenge

The Aibo had a bit too much fun

This Aibo partied a bit too hard after the match vs. CMU.

US Open 2008: Day 0

After a 15 hour trip yesterday, we arrived to our hotel in Pittsburgh, PA at around 8:30 PM.

We got to the venue this morning, the Carnegie Melon Science Center and have been setting up since then. Assuming I can find a USB cable for the digital camera, pictures to come.

Quadruped robot walks 5.6 miles

See here:

Not quite bipedal, but pretty cool. In particular the article notes that

The event … was to show off the machine’s energy efficiency. Unlike other walking robots that use motors to control every movement, the Ranger emulates human walking, using gravity to help swing its legs forward.

Standing still, the robot looks a bit like a tall sawhorse; walking, it suggests a human on crutches, alternately swinging forward two outside legs and then two inside ones. There are no knees, but at the ends of the legs are feet that can be tipped up and down, so that the robot pushes off with its toes, then tilts its feet upward to land on the heels as it brings its legs forward.

Video from Finals available

Sorry for the long delay; google video was giving some trouble

video of final match

This is just the basic, edited version with all the nonessential gameplay footage removed. I’ll release a version later with more color commentary type things (team impressions, reactions, etc.)

As an easter egg, watch a demonstration of a robot assembling LEGO blocks here

cmu nbites

I figured there should be at least one team picture up here. The guys in green are CMU, the other American team in the top 3

as henry said, I am working on the video but it’s a little more complicated than usual due to the fact that it had to be split between two tapes.

I’ll be posting two versions, one an edited one with just the game play, and a much longer version to more accurately reflect the vibe of the venue and how we were feeling before and after the match
